GEEMD, Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation, and Buffalo Bayou Partnership, with the Houston-Galveston Area Council, are conducting a Livable Centers study in historic Second Ward and Fifth Ward.The project seeks to create walkable, mixed use places that provide multi-modal transportation, improve environmental quality, and promote economic development. This Livable Centers study is unique as a strong collaboration between adjacent neighborhoods, and will engage area residents, workers, government agencies, businesses and institutions in developing recommendations for improvements. These can include transportation, economic development, housing choice and affordability, sustainability, open space, and placemaking recommendations.

A series of 4 public meetings was held in September, 2014, at locations in the Fifth Ward and Second Ward, to engage stakeholders and evaluate existing conditions in the neighborhoods. Conceptual planning with input from the two historic neighborhoods is now complete, and information gathered at the January 27th public meeting will be used to develop designs that incorporate all suggestions and ideas into implementable plans.
