As a community effort to address transportation challenges, the East End District is implementing a comprehensive strategy focusing on transportation safety, quality of life and mobility throughout the district. Key initiatives include: creating a comprehensive safety action plan, identifying traffic flow impediments such as blocked railroad crossings, damaged crossings, inadequate pedestrian access, and malfunctioning traffic control devices.

TEAM

The East End District Road and Rail Safety Team provide subject matter expertise and project management skills to better inform and guide transportation safety and mobility resources to the District.  Their effort brings years of management and operational experience from emergency services, public safety, research, and public health to assist in making the District a safe and flowing community to live, work, shop, and play.  By using a holistic approach coupled with experience in developing public and private partnership, the Road and Rail Safety Team have brought in over two million dollars in grants, in-kind services, and equipment donations to better serve the neighborhoods.

TAG Road Safety Concerns

  • Rail blockages and movement in and out of the District.
  • Navigating people safely in and out of the District, specifically concerns regarding through traffic and their use of private driveways to bypass train blockages.
  • Options for commercial vehicles at rail crossings as they are unable to reverse the vehicle.
  • Speeding and street racing.
  • Increased signage (i.e., stop signs).
  • School safety, specifically in the Houston Independent School District, where crossing guards have been eliminated and the walk to school radius has increased to three miles.
